Design to Execution

  • Brief and Set up

The brief : the key question is what are you looking to achieve?

Sophy will ask questions: who, what, when?

She’s interested in your life, your interests and how you move within the space of your home and garden.

A site survey is carried out (by an outside agent): measurements, window heights, entrance, exit points, drains etc.

Sophy conducts the survey analysis observing boundary treatment, access, trees and shrubs of notable interest, vistas, sunny areas, shady areas, utility zones. In some cases this includes historical research, conservation, honouring the original and understanding how to move forward with integrity, understanding interior to create flow from inside out.

  • Design Layers

Pen to paper - initial sketches to scaled plans.

First, a landscape plan detailing the areas within the garden: boundary, borders, beds, patios, paths, pergolas, washing line, water features, trees and hedging and the materials.

Second, a planting plan showing a space for each shrubs, perennials and grasses to live within the beds and borders.

Planting is designed to be successional (bees need pollen and we desire a pleasing view).

Alongside the plant schedule a maintenance plan is written for you. This reminds you and your gardener (maybe) what you have and how to look after it and when to look out for its moment of flowering/interest.

  • Build and Grow

Sophy designs to detail. Clear documentation shows setting out, site lines and build details.

Lighting and Irrigation plans are added by specialists.

Landscapers are invited to tender for the works and the right team are engaged. During the build site visits are vital to ensure plans are correctly followed and any unforeseen matters resolved.

Aftercare is a must and despite research and good planting there will always be something that does not quite grow to plan - it is mother nature!. Garden visits offer an opportunity to evaluate, and refresh. Sometimes life takes over and we need gardening help too. This is easy to arrange.
